MOT inspection guide
What the MOT Checks.
Pick an area to see what the tester looks at. It's a summary of the DVSA inspection: the test follows the full MOT inspection manual.
01/ 08
Lights
Headlamps, sidelights, brake lights, indicators, fog, reversing and number plate lamps are checked for condition, operation, colour and security. Headlamp aim is set against a beam tester.
Before the test: walk round with the lights on and ask someone to watch the brake lights.
02/ 08
Tyres and wheels
Car tyres need at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the width, all the way round. Tyres are checked for cuts, bulges and the right size and type, and wheels for damage and secure fixing.
Before the test: check the tread and the sidewalls, including the inside edge.
03/ 08
Brakes
Braking performance is measured on a roller brake tester. Pedals, pipes, hoses, discs, pads and the parking brake are inspected, and the brake and ABS warning lights must work correctly.
Warning light on? Diagnostics are free when booked with your MOT.
04/ 08
Steering and suspension
Steering joints, the rack and the column are checked for wear and excess play. Springs, shock absorbers and suspension arms are checked for condition, corrosion and leaks.
Worth knowing: knocks over bumps or a car that wanders are worth a look before the test.
05/ 08
Exhaust and emissions
The exhaust must be secure and free from serious leaks. Emissions are measured against the limits for the engine type and age, and a diesel particulate filter that has been removed or tampered with is a fail.
Engine warning light on? That's a fail on most cars. Get it read first.
06/ 08
Windscreen, wipers and mirrors
Damage larger than 10mm in the area directly in front of the driver, or larger than 40mm elsewhere in the wiper-swept area, is a fail. Wipers, washers and mirrors must be present and work.
Before the test: top up the screenwash and check the wiper blades for splits.
07/ 08
Seatbelts and seats
Every seatbelt is checked for condition, operation and secure mounting. The driver's seat must adjust and lock in position, and seat backs must be secure.
Before the test: pull each belt out fully and check it retracts.
08/ 08
Body, plates and horn
The tester looks for serious corrosion or sharp edges, especially near load-bearing areas, and checks doors, the bonnet catch, the horn and the vehicle identification number. Number plates must be secure, legible and correctly spaced.
Before the test: clean the plates and clear the boot and footwells.
